XML Hydrographic Reports

Coast Survey has developed a set of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) schemas to be used to generate and validate descriptive reports (DR).

NOS Hydrographic Surveys Specifications and Deliverables requires NOAA field units and hydrographic contractors to submit DRs in XML format, which can be converted into a PDF for easy reading and printing. XML is metadata friendly, helps reduce errors, and standardizes products.

XML reports are archived and available at the National Geophysical Data Center. Metadata from these reports also automatically populates databases such as the Hydrographic Surveys Metadata Database.

Schemas are updated at least annually to align with Specifications and Deliverables and the Field Procedures Manual.
