As of the 2013 version of the NOS Hydrographic Surveys Specifications and Deliverables (HSSD), both NOAA field units and hydrographic contractors are required to submit Descriptive Reports (DRs) in eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format, which can be converted into a PDF for ease of reading.
XML allows for the enhanced dissemination and utilization of hydrographic survey metadata to and by various users in the scientific and marine communities. It also helps to reduces errors, provides standardization between products, and increases efficiency and usability
XML reports will be archived and made available at the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), enabling different user-communities to easily query and harvest relevant information. Metadata from these XML reports will also be used to automatically populate databases, such as the Hydrographic Surveys Metadata Database (HSMDB).
The Hydrographic Surveys Division (HSD) has developed a set of schemas to be used as the standard for generating DRs. Those who submit hydrographic survey data to Office of Coast Survey (OCS) should ensure that their XML DRs validate against these schemas.
Schemas will be updated at least annually, in order to ensure that they align with the most current versions of the HSSD and OCS’ Field Procedure Manual (FPM).
