The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor across the main channel from Governors Island. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the colossal copper and iron structure reaches a height of 305 feet (including the pedestal). The statue, dedicated in 1886, was a gift to the United States from France and has become a symbol of freedom to people everywhere. The entire structure faces southeast greeting ships entering New York Harbor. Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty are maintained by the National Park Service. The surrounding waters within 150 yards of Liberty Island are protected by a Safety and Security Zone shown on National Ocean Service chart 12334.
