LT Tim Smith is originally from Cape Cod, MA and has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He joined the NOAA Corps in 2006 and, having completed BOTC training at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, has spend the majority of his career conducting hydrographic survey work in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California as Junior Officer and Operations Officer on NOAA Ship Rainier and Fairweather. LT Smith has also supported the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory as an Ocean Engineer, helping develop environmental monitoring systems deployed in weather buoys, subsurface arrays, remote and autonomous systems, as well as ship and shore based equipment used by Lab for ocean acidification, tsunami detection and forecasting, hydrothermal vent systems, fisheries oceanography, and long term climate monitoring and analysis.
